Oxleas Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Preceptorship Programme
Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) provide a diverse range of therapies and play a key role in providing mental health and physical care. They use their expertise in Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Speech and Language, to treat a wide range of patients from the very young to the elderly, and those with learning disabilities and mental health issues, both in the community and in forensic settings. However, in London, there is a current turnover of AHPs of between 20-25%. Research indicates that the first two years of employment are crucial in determining job retention. Our AHP Preceptorship Programme recognises this as an issue and was launched in January 2019 to improve retention rates among this highly skilled workforce. The main retention challenge for AHPs across London is at Band 6 level. Our unique programme supports the newly qualified in their transition from ‘student’ to ‘accountable clinician’, ensuring a positive start to a new career for of the professional AHP groups:
As part of the programme, two part time Programme leads were appointed to host regular meetings with preceptees, provide training to support preceptors, liaise with AHP clinical supervisors, heads of profession, universities and professional bodies which has resulted in a significant retention improvement within Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. Following a successful bid to Health Education England, we have now been awarded funding to deliver a Pan-London AHP Preceptorship Programme based on the Oxleas NHS model. The nine mental health trusts included in the programme are:
* Integrated community and mental health NHS Trusts.
We would like to take this opportunity to formally thank Dr Mary Morley, Author of the Preceptorship Handbook for Occupational Therapists and South West London and St George’s NHS Trust for supporting Occupational Therapists with the Preceptorship Programme and ‘Train the Trainer’ for the Programme Leads.
